The History of Union Catholic Track & Field and Cross Country

The story of Union Catholic Track & Field and Cross Country is one of vision, commitment, and an unwavering pursuit of excellence.

What began as a small high school program has grown into one of the most successful and respected track and field programs in New Jersey—and one of the premier programs in the United States. Through decades of dedicated athletes, coaches, families, and supporters, Union Catholic has built a tradition where championships are expected, records are challenged, and character is valued above all else.

The Early Years

Since Union Catholic High School opened its doors in 1964, athletics have been an important part of the school’s mission. The track and cross country programs steadily developed over the years, producing outstanding athletes while establishing a reputation for hard work, sportsmanship, and competitive excellence.

Each generation of Viking athletes laid another brick in the foundation, creating a culture that future teams would build upon.

Building a Championship Culture

The modern era of Union Catholic Track & Field and Cross Country has been defined by an unwavering commitment to developing the complete student-athlete.

The program emphasizes:

  • Faith
  • Character
  • Teamwork
  • Leadership
  • Competitive Excellence
  • Academic Success

Athletes are taught that success is measured not only by championships and records, but by becoming better teammates, leaders, and people.

This philosophy has created a culture where athletes consistently outperform expectations while developing lifelong friendships and lasting memories.

A New Jersey Powerhouse

Today, Union Catholic is recognized as one of the most dominant programs in New Jersey history.

Across cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track, Union Catholic teams have captured dozens of conference, county, sectional, and state championships while producing some of the finest athletes ever to compete in the Garden State.

The program has also become known nationally for its depth. Rather than relying on a handful of stars, Union Catholic has consistently built complete teams capable of competing for championships every season.

That consistency has produced an unprecedented level of success. The girls program has established one of the longest championship dynasties in New Jersey history, while the boys program has become a perennial state title contender across all three seasons.

National Recognition

Union Catholic’s success extends well beyond New Jersey.

Over the years, Viking athletes have earned:

  • National Championships
  • National Records
  • State Records
  • Meet of Champions titles
  • Nike Cross Nationals appearances
  • Penn Relays Championships
  • New Balance National Championships
  • All-American honors
  • NCAA Division I scholarships
  • Professional and Olympic opportunities

The program has become nationally respected for producing elite relay teams, outstanding distance runners, exceptional sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers, throwers, and multi-event athletes.

More importantly, Union Catholic has developed generations of young men and women who have continued their success long after graduation.

The Home of Champions

The phrase “Home of Champions” is more than a slogan.

It represents the daily commitment to doing the little things the right way.

Every workout…
Every practice…
Every race…
Every teammate…
Every season…

The expectation is to pursue excellence while supporting one another as a family.

Athletes quickly discover that being a Viking means becoming part of something much bigger than themselves.

More Than Wins and Records

While championships and records are celebrated, the greatest measure of Union Catholic’s success is the people who have worn the Viking uniform.

Former athletes have gone on to become Olympians, NCAA champions, All-Americans, coaches, teachers, doctors, engineers, business leaders, military officers, and community leaders throughout the country.

The relationships built within the program often last a lifetime.

That legacy continues with every new athlete who chooses to become part of Union Catholic Track & Field and Cross Country.

The Tradition Continues

Every season brings new goals, new athletes, and new opportunities to add another chapter to Union Catholic’s remarkable history.

The standards remain the same:

Compete with passion.

Lead with humility.

Honor the team.

Pursue greatness.

Build a legacy worthy of those who came before.

Welcome to Union Catholic Track & Field and Cross Country.

Welcome to the Home of Champions.
