UC girls break county record, win 4×100 relay at State Meet of Champions
Morant and 4×400 relay place second, Brown and Duru each place third for boys
The Union Catholic girls 4×100-meter relay team wanted to make a big statement at Saturday’s NJSIAA Meet of Champions at Northern Burlington High School in Columbus.
And the Vikings delivered by sending a message to the rest of the state that was heard loud and clear by burning a 47.05 to finish first and take down the Union County record in the 4×100 relay. Eastern was second in 47.36.
UC’s foursome of Chi Chi Nkulume, Sydney Tucker, Khamil Evans and Felicia Quainoo, running together for the first time this season in the 4×100, took down the Union County record of 47.07 that Summit ran to win the M of C title in 2017. UC’s 47.05 is also the fastest time in the state this season.
While the 4×100 victory was the biggest highlight of the meet for UC, there were several other impressive performances turned in by the Vikings.
For the girls, Leena Morant placed second in the 800 in a school record 2:08,91 the third fastest time in the state this season, and anchored the 4×400 relay that placed second in 3:49.37. Tucker finished fourth in the 100 dash in 11.9, Jerika Lufrano ran a school record 4:57.40 to place fourth in the 1,600, the 4×800 squad finished third in 9:28.01, Quainoo placed seventh in the triple jump (38-0 1/2), and Nkulume was seventh in the 400 in 56.76.
For the UC boys, junior Elijah Brown finished third in the 800 in 1:54,.53, Uchenna Duru was third in the discus with a personal best throw of 175-10, Conor Reilly tied for fourth in the pole vault (14-6), the 4×100 team placed sixth in 42.64, the 4×400 squad was ninth (3:21.18), and Myles Plummer placed ninth in the 800 in 1:56.15.
