UC Girls & Boys Win Conference Championship
Evans, Martinez, Kwasnik, Ysaac, Lufrano and Cooper all star for the Vikings
The Union Catholic girls picked up victories from six different athletes on the way to its fifth straight title at the Union County Conference Track and Field Championships, which concluded on Friday at Gov. Livingston High School in Berkeley Heights.
The Vikings defeated runner-up Westfield, 199-100, to finish first in the Watchung Division.
Zamira Ysaac and Khamil Evans had huge meets for the Vikings.
Ysaac, a sophomore, smashed the meet record and PR with a winning time of 1:02.46, the second fastest time in the state this season, and ran 2:18.17 to lead a a 1-2-3 finish for UC. Ashleigh Patterson was second in a PR of 2:18.55, and Morgan Jackson placed third in 2:21.53.
Evans, a junior, won the 400 in a meet record 56.18, No. 6 in the state this season, and placed first in the 200 in 25.06.
Also for the Vikings, Jerika Lufrano won the 3,200 in 11:06.07, Martinez won the discus (102-2) and was second in the shot put (35-4 1/2), Asiah Cooper finished first in the triple jump with a 37-1, and Alexandra Kwasnik cleared 5-2 to win the high jump, and the 4×400 team ran 3:57.97 to finish first.
Union Catholic will be back in action at the Union County Championships on Wednesday and Thursday at Hub Stine Field in Plainfield.
Reilly breaks state record as UC boys win 9th straight title at Conference meet
White, Miller, McLaughlin, Cadas also capture titles for the Vikings
Conor Reilly broke a state record, and Justin Cadas, Ryan McLaughlin, Daryl Miller, and Krishna White all captured titles to lead Union Catholic to its ninth straight boys title
at the Union County Conference Championships, which concluded on Friday at Gov. Livingston High School in Berkeley Heights.
Reilly cleared 14-9 1/4 on his final attempt to break the state sophomore record of 14-9 set in 1981 by Ray Maragni of Seton Hall Prep as UC defeated Elizabeth, 142-93, in the Watchung Division. Reilly’s 14-9 1/4 is the No. 2 vault in N.J. this season.
McLaughlin won the 110 hurdles in 1463, Cadas captured the 800 in 1:56.60, Miller was first in the 200 with a PR of 22.31, and White won the triple jump with a PR of 46-9 1/2 and the high jump (6-2), and was second in the long jump with a PR of 21-0. And the 4×400 relay team finished first in a NJ #10 3:21.47.
In other highlights, Miller was second in the 100 in 11.36, Elijah Brown was third in the 400 in 49.29 and fourth in the 800 with a huge PR of 1:57.83, Brandon Patterson placed third in both the shot put (53-11) and third in the discus (157-3), Justin Jimersonplaced second in the javelin with a 160-11, and Uchenna Duru placed fourth in the discus with a PR of 157-0 and was fourth in the shot put with a 50-1.
The Vikings will be back in action at the Union County Championships on Wednesday and Thursday at Hub Stine Field in Plainfield.
