UC Girls Win Their Season Opener
Double winner Tucker helps UC girls roll to season opening victory
The Vikings won the Essex County Coaches Season Opener by more than 100 points
Sydney Tucker won two sprint races with personal best times and Union Catholic picked up victories from five other athletes as the Vikings overpowered the competition on the way to a huge victory in its season opener at the Essex County Track Coaches Invitational at Ocean Breeze on Friday on Staten Island.
Tucker, a junior, won the 55-meter dash in 7.30 and the 200 in 25.90 to help the Vikings roll to a 157-38 victory over runner-up West Orange.
UC, favored to win its fifth straight Non-Public A State Track and Field title this season, also received victories from Khamil Evans, Leena Morant, Hope Handlin, A’Liyah Thomas, and Felicia Quainoo, and the 4×400 was also victorious (4:05.90).
Evans won the 400 in 58.35, Morant led a 1-2-3-4 finish for the Vikings in the 800 with a winning time of 2:19.92, Handlin won the pole vault at 9-6, Thomas captured the high jump (4-10) and was second in the long jump (16-3 1/2), and Quainoo won the 55 hurdles in 8.49.
In other highlights, freshman Sydney McDonald made a great high school debut by placing third in the 20 in 26.75, and fifth in the 55 dash in 7.60. Angelique Williams finished second in the high jump (4-10), fourth in the long jump (16-1), and was sixth in the 55 hurdles in 9.01. Isabella Gray came up with a third place finish for the Vikings in the pole vault by clearing 9-0.
