Girls Stay Perfect. Win 4th Straight NPA State Title
UC girls T&F team stays perfect by winning fourth straight Non-Public A State title
The Vikings finished the season undefeated in team competition
The Union Catholic girls track and field team put an exclamation point on its undefeated season with a dominating performance at Sunday’s NJSIAA Non-Public A Track and Field Championships at the Bennett Center in Toms River.
The Vikings received contributions from 12 different athletes and ran away with its fourth straight state title, 90-46 over runner-up Pingry.
With the victory, UC finished the season undefeated in team competition. On its march to perfection, the Vikings swept the Union County Track and Field and Relay titles, swept the State Non-Public A Track and Field and Relay championships, and captured the NJCTC title.
UC scored in nine of the 10 events, with its lone victory coming in the 4×400 with a time of 3:59.01, which makes the Vikings the No. 2 seed at this Saturday’s Meet of Champions at the Bennett Center.
In the 4×400, Brianna Ewing split 1:00.7, Leena Morant went 57.9, Mia Bennett-Jones ran 1:01.8, and Khamil Evans anchored in 59.4
Morant and Evans also added second-place finishes for UC. Morant broke her own school sophomore record by placing 2nd in the 800 in 2:17.73 as UC went 2-3-4 in the 2-lap race. Evans was second in the 400 in 58.22.
Jerika Lufrano had a huge day for UC. She placed third in the 1,600 in 5:10.60 and then came back to finish second in the 3,200 in 11:13.74.
In other highlights, Felicia Quianoo was second in the 55 hurdles in 8.59 (8.57 in the trials), Ewing placed third in the hurdles in 8.61, Morgan Williams was third in the 800 in 2:19.87, Zamira Ysaac placed fourth in the 800 in 2:20.18, Angelique Williams was third in the high jump (5-2), Christina Samuels placed 2nd in the shot put (34-0 1/2), Sophia Martinez was third in the shot put (33-9 3/4), and Sydney Tucker was third in the 55 dash in 7.47 (7.46 in the trials)
The Vikings will be back in action at the Eastern States Championships tomorrow (Tuesday) night at the New Balance Track and Field Center in New York, and then will compete at the state Meet of Champions this Saturday at the Bennett Center.
