Girls Take 5th Straight Sectional Title!
The UC girls rack up staggering meet record 240 points, win 5th straight sectional title
The boys placed a very strong second at the Non-Public A South Jersey Championships
The Union Catholic girls continued to add to its legacy as one of the greatest dynasties in state history with an epic performance at the NJSIAA South Jersey Non-Public A Championships that concluded on Tuesday at Donovan Catholic in Toms River.
The Vikings piled up nine victories and racked up a staggering meet record 240 points to win its fifth straight girls title, outscoring runner-up Paul VI by a whopping 138 points.
The Union Catholic boys also had a very strong meet, scoring 135.33 to place second to Christian Brothers, first with 159 points.
UC had several athletes come up with huge performances.
Senior Jerika Lufrano pulled off the distance double by winning the girls 1,600 and 3,200. The LaSalle-bound Lufrano, who won the 1,600 at the Indoor Meet of Champions this past winter, won the 1,600 in 5:07.98 on Monday and the 3,200 on Tuesday in 11:13.09.
Junior Sydney Tucker won the 100 (12.46) and 200 (25.17), junior Leena Morant won the 800 in 2:14.92 and was second to teammate Chidumga Nkulume in the 400. Nkulume won the 400 in 56.23 and was second in the 100 in 12.53.
Junior Alexandra Kwasnik won the high jump by clearing 5-4, and the Vikings also won the 4×800 and 4×100 relays
Also for the UC girls, senior Khamil Evans finished fourth in the shot put (32-4), fifth in the 400 (58.79), and third in the 200 (25.88), and junior Felicia Quainoo won three silver medals, finishing second in the 100 hurdles (14.71), long jump (17-7 and triple jump (36-2 1/4)
For the UC boys, junior Elijah Brown won the 800 in 1:55.28 an was fourth in the 400 in 49.15. Uchenna Duru finished first in the discus with a huge personal best of 172-1 and was fourth in the shot put. Conor Reilly won the pole vault by clearing 14-0, and placed third in the long jump and sixth in the triple jump, and the Vikings won the 4×100 relay. UC also received a runner-up finish from Ryan McLaughlin in the high hurdles in 15.23, Oluwafemi Asenuga was second in the triple jump with a 42-10 1/4, Myles Plummer finished third in the 800 (1:56.39) and fourth in the 1,600 (4:24.44), Tyhir Jones placed third in the 200 (22.61) and seventh in the 400 (50.54), and Chinedu Okoro finished third in the 100 in 11.34.
The UC track and field teams will be back in action at the State Non-Public A Championships on May 31 and June 1 at Central Regional High School
