Amari Onque-Shabazz of Union Catholic, one of the state’s biggest track and field stars, has made a verbal college commitment, her coach Mike McCabe said on Wednesday.
The winner is………….Villanova!!!!
Onque-Shabazz also had offers from Michigan, Richmond, and Northeastern.
Onque-Shabazz, who has remarkable range, has put together a remarkable resume during her high school days, highlighted by an outdoor season last spring that was simply remarkable.
As a junior this past spring, Onque Shabazz won the 800 at the Meet of Champions by running a personal best 2:10.03, ran a 400 PR of 56.14, split 54.2 on the Union Catholic 4×400 that won the New Balance National title in 3:35.90, a NJ state record and No. 2 in U.S. history, earned All-American honors in the SMR, and ran a PR of 5:05.27 in the 1,600.
That’s not all.
Onque-Shabazz is also a very strong cross-country runner. On Tuesday she ran 19:29 to win the Mountain Division title at the Union County Conference Championships to help UC capture the team title, and she has a Holmdel Park PR of 19:08. Led by Onque-Shabazz, the Union Catholic XC team is currently ranked No. 8 in the state.
