Girsl Win 9 Events at Metuchen Relays
UC girls dominate the Metuchen Relays with 9 wins, and 2 national qualifiers
Lufrano smashed meet record in 5K, Kwasnik had huge PR, and Morant and Evans shined
The Union Catholic girls solidified its status as arguably the best track and field squad in New Jersey with a remarkable all-round performance at Saturday’s ninth annual Metuchen Relays.
It all started with Jerika Lufrano‘s sizzling meet and school record run in the 5K when she blasted a 17:45.79 to qualify for the New Balance Nationals, and ended with the Vikings winning the meet-concluding 4×400-meter relay in 4:07.98, the No. 4 time in N.J. this season.
In between those two first-place finishes, the Vikings won seven other events for a total of nine victories, qualified for New Balance Nationals in the 800 sprint medley, and racked up numerous NJ No. 1 performances.
On the track, sophomore Leena Morant and Khamil Evans were sensational for UC.
Morant split 2:16.0 to anchor the 4×800 to a come from behind victory in a NJ #2 9:42.47, and dropped a 58.5 on the winning 1,600 sprint medley that rna a NJ #2 4:15.64. Evans ran 24.9 on the winning 4×200 that ran a NJ #1 1:44.60, and split 58.1 as the anchor on the 800 sprint medley that place second in a NJ #2 1:49.71, which qualified for NB Nationals. UC also placed second in the 4×100 in a NJ #2 50.87
UC also dominated the hurdles as Brianna Ewing exploded with a big personal best and NJ #1 14.87 to win the 100 hurdles and placed second in the 400 hurdles, and Zamira Ysaac won the 400 hurdles in a NJ #1 1:06.00. Ysaac also anchored the winning SMR with a 2:23.8 carry.
In the field, Alexandra Kwasnik and Asiah Cooper scored big victories.
Kwasnik, a sophomore, continued her very impressive early season by clearing a personal best 5-2 to win the high jump and she just missed making 5-4. Cooper soared 34-3 to finish first in the triple jump.
