UC Boys & Girls Win County Relay Title
UC receives several strong performances on the way to 7th Union County Relay title in 8 years
The Vikings smashed the school record in the discus on way to 30 point win over Rahway
The Union Catholic boys track and field team received several great performances on its way to a second straight title and seventh championship in the past eight years at Friday’s 75th Union County Relays on Friday’s at Gary Kehler Stadium in Westfield.
The Vikings piled up 107 points to outscore runner-up Rahway by 30 points.
There were lots of highlights for UC.
The trio of Uchenna Duru, who threw a huge PR and NJ #15 of 156-0, Brandon Patterson (138-2), and David Saggio (129-0) combined to win the discus with a school record total 423-2. The old school record of 419-6 set in 2014.
Conor Reilly cleared a meet best 14-0 and Obadare Animashaun made 11-0 to give the Vikings a victory in the team pole vault.
Animashaun also blasted a 22.5 on the 4×200 that finished first in a NJ #6 1:29.42, and ran on the runner-up shuttle hurdles.
The 4×100 team ran a NJ #5 42.80 to place second.
Trevor Garrity ran a 2:02 on the anchor of the third-place sprint medley, 2:03 on the third-place 4×800, and 4:44 on the third-place 4×1600.
Krishna White cleared a meet best 6-4 to lead the Vikings to a runner-up finish in the high jump, and went 45-9 to hellp UC get second in the triple jump.
Justin Cadas went 3:14 on the runner-up distance medley relay, and 1:57 in the 4×800.
UC girls dominate Union County Relays, roll to fourth straight title
The Vikings won seven events on the track and smashed two meet records
The Union Catholic girls track and field team broke two meets records and won eight events during a dominating performance at the 75th Union County Relays when the Vikings rolled to its fourth straight title on Friday at Gary Kehler Stadium in Westfield.
The Vikings, which received contributions from several athletes, won with 99 1/2 points. Westfield was second with 56.
On the opening day of competition on Thursday, UC broke meet records in both the distance medley relay and the 4×100 relay.
In the DMR, Alexandra Borik ran 3:47.9 (a 14 second personal best), Ashleigh Paterson ran a PR of 59.1, Morgan Jackson went 2:20.2 and Jerika Lufrano anchored in 5:08.0 for a meet record 12:17.53, tied for No. 2 in N.J. this season. The former meet record of 12:27.81 was set by New Providence in 2016 .
UC, using Sydney Tucker, Kira Alexander, Khamil Evans, and Amaya Chadwick, also 47.51 to break its own meet record of 47.76 set last year.
The UC girls now own 8 of the meet records nine meet records on the track. The only one the Vikings don’t own is the 3×400 hurdles.
The Vikings also ran NJ #1 times to win the 4×200 in 1:40.23 and the sprint medley in 4:07.45, and captured the 4×400 in 3:54.52, the 4×800 in 9:46.01 the 3×400 records in 3:20.44, the triple jump with a combined 101-2 1/4.
In the SMR, junior Khamil Evans blasted a 56.1 400 leg, and Leena Morant split 2:19.0, and soph. Zamira Ysaac ran a meet best 1:04.37 in the 400 hurdles, and Tucker ripped a 24.1 in the 4×200. Tyler Scott of UC leaped a meet best 35-7 3/4 in the triple jump.
And for anyone that thinks the Vikings won’t be as strong next year, the winning 4×800 and DMR teams and the runner-up 4×1,600 team didn’t use any seniors.
The UC girls now own NJ #1 times in four events-the 4×100 (47.42), 4×200 (1:40.23), 4×800 (9:10.04), and sprint medley (4:07.45), and are NJ #2 in the DMR (12:17.53) and 4×400 (3:54.38).
